Les \u00ab\u00a0\u00c9v\u00e9nements\u00a0\u00bb conduisent les autorit\u00e9s du pays \u00e0 enlever du Mus\u00e9e National les oeuvres d\u2019art et \u00e0 les mettre \u00e0 l\u2019abri. Le narrateur, Ignace, un ancien diplomate est charg\u00e9 de veiller sur les peintures que des convois de camions apportent dans la ferme-ch\u00e2teau du Fosberg. Parmi celles-ci, un tableau de Willem van Haecht repr\u00e9sentant le marchand anversois Corn\u00e9lius van der Geest faisant visiter sa collection&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ignace, \u00e0 l\u2019instar d\u2019un Montaigne enferm\u00e9 dans la tour de son ch\u00e2teau, \u00e9crit \u00e0 la fois un journal du s\u00e9jour forc\u00e9 qu\u2019il effectue au Fosberg (o\u00f9 il m\u00eale des souvenirs d\u2019enfance, m\u00e9ditations sur la litt\u00e9rature et l\u2019art, consid\u00e9rations sur la diplomatie) et un r\u00e9cit consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 Willem van Haecht, l\u2019auteur de \u00ab\u00a0La Chambre d\u2019Art\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Querton est un \u00e9rudit qui use du romanesque pour entra\u00eener son lecteur dans un livre qui aurait, \u00e0 n\u2019en pas douter, inspir\u00e9 le cin\u00e9aste Andr\u00e9 Delvaux. On sait combien le cin\u00e9aste admirait Gracq et Yourcenar, deux noms qui viennent \u00e0 l\u2019esprit du lecteur de ce premier roman. On ne peut \u00eatre insensible au r\u00e9alisme magique dont se nimbent l\u2019\u00e9poque troubl\u00e9e et la g\u00e9ographie incertaine que nous raconte Querton.
