Dans chacune des  peintures qu&rsquo;il nous en donne \u00e0 voir, il y a un d\u00e9chiffrement de l&rsquo;imm\u00e9diat et de sa complexit\u00e9. Ainsi, un alignement de verres sur la console d&rsquo;un bar, une succession de chaussures dans un \u00e9talage, le troublant reflet de la rue dans une vitre, tout semble mati\u00e8re \u00e0 \u00e9veiller l&rsquo;\u00e9motion du peintre qui nous en restitue une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 plus intense. Sans doute cette sensation de \u00ab\u00a0sur-r\u00e9el\u00a0\u00bb vient-elle de notre curiosit\u00e9 \u00e0 regarder ce qui nous est montr\u00e9, \u00e0 d\u00e9placer les yeux en chaque endroit de la toile, \u00e0 en examiner les d\u00e9tails. Mertens semble nous dire que rien n&rsquo;est indigne d&rsquo;\u00eatre vu et, pour nous le d\u00e9montrer, reconstitue avec minutie ces fragments de quotidien  auxquels il donne, sur la toile, une nouvelle dignit\u00e9. Il s&rsquo;agit parfois de plans d&rsquo;ensemble (comme le garage de Bruno, surencombr\u00e9 d&rsquo;accessoires, d&rsquo;outils, de carcasses m\u00e9talliques) ou de d\u00e9tails pris au plus pr\u00e8s (comme ces filets de p\u00eache ou ces algues). Chaque fois, le spectateur est happ\u00e9 par ce qui lui est donn\u00e9 \u00e0 voir. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;exploration de l&rsquo;oeuvre est chaque fois une source de surprise, d&rsquo;\u00e9motion, de po\u00e9sie. Car c&rsquo;est bien de cela qu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;agit: porter un regard de po\u00e8te sur le r\u00e9el pour en faire oeuvre. Et Mertens en est devenu, en quelques ann\u00e9es seulement (il a d\u00e9but\u00e9 sa \u00ab\u00a0troisi\u00e8me vie\u00a0\u00bb, celle d&rsquo;artiste,  en 2018! ) , un incontestable exemple par sa ma\u00eetrise, l&rsquo;intensit\u00e9 de son art et cette gr\u00e2ce qui semble \u00e9maner de chacune des oeuvres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jean Jauniaux, le 28 septembre 2022.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PS: en 2023 Bert Mertens exposera \u00e0 la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.24b.paris\/\">Galerie 24 b <\/a>\u00e0 Paris.
